Peter Bissell

Stevenage Cycling Club members were greatly saddened to hear of the recent death of local cyclist Peter Bissell. Although not a club member, Peter was well known to many of us as a friend and fellow cyclist. Peter would occasionally join us on our club rides and had recently been on several rides with us in preparation for the new season. His fitness and dedication to the sport often meant he'd leave us after a three hour ride to go on and do two or three more!
Peter won the 2006 National Espoirs Road Race Championships, the Chris Boardman Trophy in 2005, and most recently was part of the winning Arctic-Shorter Rochford racing team in the National Hill-Climb Championships in Somerset in October.
Stevenage Cycling Club extends its sincere condolences to Peter's family and friends. As reported in Cycling Weekly, Peter's family have asked that donations be sent to the Dave Rayner fund, care of Bill Holmes at 6 Brookfield Drive, Littleborough, Lancs OL15 8RH.

August 2007

The Club held their 12 mile 2-up Team Time Trial event near Guilden Morden on Saturday 26th August. A very warm afternoon with a south westerly wind meant riders had the wind on their left shoulder for the 1st leg and then battled against the wind on the return leg until turning left onto the last leg where the wind assisted them up to the finish. The results were as follows.

Men/Vets 1st Tony Ball Team Swift Allsports & John Simpkins Banbury Star CC      Time 26.05

2nd Richard Hancock St Neotst CC &Justin Lomas St Neotts CC             Time 26.34

3rd Gerard Oram Bynea CC & Robert Saunders North Bucks RC             Time 27.10

Man/Lady 1st Cath Weiss Agisko/Viner & Stuart Wright De Rosa RT                      Time 28.19

2nd Leigh Harvey North Road CC &Mark Allen North Road CC                  Time 30.15

3rd Moira Goodway Banbury Star CC & Robert Frowen Banbury Star CC  Time 30.21

Fastest riders for Stevenage CC were Parris Cripps and Steve Thomas in 30:30, followed by Dave Lowson and Paul Barrington in 30:40.
Next year, the same event will probably be held mid September and hopefully attract more riders to what feedback tells us is a great event, ridden on relatively quiet, safe roads.
Thanks again to Alan Sinclair for organising and to everyone who helped.

November 2006

On 12th November members of Stevenage Cycling Club held their annual Hill Climb Time Trial up Chalk Hill, Baldock. Richard Da Silva showed his climbing prowess by storming up the steep hill for the first time in an impressive 1 minute 27 seconds, the fastest time seen for many years. Second place went to Steve Thomas in 1:43 and in third place was newcomer Simon Allibon in 1:49. Club members then completed a fifty mile ride with a stop at a local cafe for well earned teas and coffee

August 2006

The Club held their 12 mile 2-up Team Time Trial event near Guilden Morden on Saturday afternoon. The event attracted some top riders including the Women's 2005 British Best All Rounder Champion, Ruth Eyles. Ruth and race partner Neil Peart, recorded the fastest time of 25:55, averaging over 27mph. Fastest riders for Stevenage CC were Parris Cripps and Steve Thomas in 28:13, followed by Richard Da Silva and Paul Barrington in 30:31. Racing against the clock in competition for the first time, Stevenage CC member Norma Nickolay, with husband Dan, recorded 35:44, averaging over 20mph.
Thanks to Alan Sinclair for organising and to everyone who helped.

July 2006

Congratulations to Paul Barrington for completing his first 25 mile time trial in a very respectable 01:05:14 in the Verulam 25 on Sunday 16th July.

Sunday 9th July: On a memorably warm and pleasant day members of Stevenage Cycling Club headed East for a ride to Newport and back, through some lovely quiet and shady lanes. As the morning went on and everyone's water bottles became empty, a stop at Buntingford was required to refill and eat. This was one of those idyllic summer days that you wait for all through the winter. Average speed 17 mph, Distance 55 miles. The photo was taken on a quiet lane on the way to Rickling Green. (Click photo to enlarge).

June 2006

On Sunday Morning, June 4th, Alan Sinclair, Norman Coltman, Richard Dasilva, Dave Lowson and Paul Barrington lined up for the start of the 140 mile Tilff-Bastogne-Tilff Randonne through the Belgian Ardenne. Norman obviously knew what was in store and wisely decided to ride the shorter 80 mile event. The ride is by no means flat and near the end takes in the formidable Cote De La Redoute a 2 Km climb averaging just under 10% gradient. For photos see here.

May 2006

The evening 10 series starts on Wednesday 31st May. This has been delayed a couple of weeks due to people being knackered from the Majorca trip and bad weather!

Dan Nickolay competed in the National LVRC Road Race Championship on Sunday 28th and after a very hard race on the Blakemore circuit in Essex, finished a respectable 16th.

Stevenage CC members along with friends from the North Road Cycling Club and FVS-TRI returned from a 10 day trip to Majorca. The weather was fantastic and the resort and roads were surprisingly quiet. There were a few who unfortunately picked up colds and coughs but everyone managed to get out on their bikes most days. Highlights of the week included the trip to the mountain top Monastery near Moscari, giving spectacular views of the Island and the 90 mile trip taking in Pollentia, Lluc, Soller, Bunyola, Orient, Selva and Campanet.

March 2006

Stevenage Cycling Club members began the road racing season recently with an eighth place for Tim Read in the Hemel Hempstead Spring Chicken Road Race. Dan Nickolay, Parris Cripps & Dave Lowson competed in a veterans road race near Thaxted on Sunday 19th March. Dave Lowson, competing in his first ever road race, led the chasing bunch for some of the race and all three riders finished in the main bunch sprint.

Parris leads the bunch through Thaxted.

December 2005

Yep, we're still here! The winter has definitely arrived and some of our rides have had to be cancelled due to the bad weather. Generally, if it's been freezing overnight we'll give it a miss rather than risk coming off on an icy corner. Better to miss one day than 6 weeks off with a broken collar bone! If you're planning on turning up at one of our weekend rides, it may be worth giving Dan or Parris a ring before you set out, to see whether there'll be a turnout.

Subs for 2006 and now due, so please fill in the form and renew your membership.

The club awards evening is on January 12th at 7.30 pm at the Marquis of Granby Pub, The North Road, Stevenage. Prizes will be presented by Simon Speller, Mayor Designate for  May 2006. Tickets are now available from Alan Sinclair. Price includes a generous buffet. See you there!

Lastly, wishing all members and friends of the club a happy Christmas and a prosperous and successful new year.

Sunday 14th August 2005

On Sunday, Steve Thomas & Dan Nickolay competed in the Edgware Road Club veteran's road Race, one of a national series and ridden by many riders from around the country. Dan came 9th in his event and Steve came 4th in his. Also on Sunday, Alan Sinclair, Parris Cripps, Paul Barrington & Norman Coltman took part in a 60 mile challenge ride through the Derbyshire Peak District taking in many peaks including Holme Moss

Evening 10 Whitwell Time Trial

The last evening 10 saw course PBs for 1st 2nd & 3rd riders, Steve Thomas, Tim Read & Laura Bissell despite conditions that didn't suggest a particularly fast evening. Results here.
Thanks to everyone from both clubs who have helped to make this event a success over the last 12 weeks, particular thanks to Brian Harrison, Alan Sinclair & friends.
The weather was fairly kind to us and we only had to cancel on 3 evenings due to rain.

Those FVS TRI riders who have enjoyed this event may want to enter Stevenage CC's 2-up Time Trial on Saturday 1st October. The event is not far away, on a quiet circuit near Guilden Morden. For details see the full events list on the CTT website
Entry forms to Jack Brace, 106 London Road, Sandy, Beds, SG19 1DN.

Sunday 31st July 2005

Tim Read rode in the Goodwood circuit races along with over 100 others in the rain, which made for an 'interesting' event!

Saturday 30th July 2005

In his first 25 mile time trial since 2003, Steve Thomas did a 59:23 in the St Ives event at Sawtry, coming 7th out of 25 finishers.

Sunday 24th July 2005

Dan Nickolay and Steve Thomas competed in the API Resprays LVRC Viper Road Race in Blackmore, Essex. A gloomy morning with rain throughout most of the events made things tricky for riders on the corners and descents. Steve got into a 5 man breakaway group from the start until caught by a group of riders after the 4th of six laps. 3 riders got away leaving the remaining group. Steve finished 9th overall. In Dan's race,

Sunday 19th June 2005

Steve Thomas competed in the High Wycombe Veterans 100k road race on a sweltering day. A very fast break of 12 quickly put several minutes into the bunch. Steve and John French from Peterborough CC then broke away from the pursuing bunch on the first lap and did a 2-up for 50+ miles! The breakaway contained 9 riders who were in the 75k race, so when they finished there were just 3 100k riders left. Steve & John came crossed the line together finishing equal 4th.

A warmer evening made this week's time trial near Whitwell a bit more pleasurable. Everyone who had ridden the previous week improved their times. Congratulations to Paul Barrington (left) who completed his first time trial in a respectable 27:41 and from the expression on his face, clearly enjoyed it !

Thanks again to Sinclair Services for timekeeping and marshalling and Tim Read for course preparation.

Parris Cripps and Steve Thomas raced in the Peterborough CC LVRC event held on a new circuit west of Sawtry. Three age-categorised races meant they rode in separate races. Parris finished in the main bunch behind a small breakaway group as did Steve in his event. The course was light on traffic and seemed to meet with approval from most riders with no particularly dangerous spots.

Evening 10 Whitwell Time Trial

With no event in 2004, it was good to see the return of Stevenage CCs first evening 10 for 2005. Steve Thomas, Dave Lowson and 6 riders from the FVS-TRI club rode the event on a chilly and blustery evening. Thanks to everyone who helped with the setting-up, marshalling and timekeeping, we just need a few more Stevenage CC riders now ! Safety considerations mean this event takes considerable effort to put on nowadays so please make every effort to get over and support the event by either riding, setting-up or marshalling. Results here.

The Derek Wilsmore Trophy will be awarded to a Stevenage CC rider at the end of the series.

STEVENAGE CYCLING CLUB RIDER IN UCI RANKING TOUR OF CAMEROON

Stevenage Cycling Club member Joe Liversidge, aged 18, will be taking part in the Tour of Cameroon 2005 race in Africa from the 26th February. The event will cover 1,611 km over two weeks in sweltering tropical conditions.

Joe, a successful rider since he became a member of the Stevenage Cycling Club at age 14, has secured the place as a result of a series of impressive performances in local and national track racing events. As a junior he won both the Junior and Senior National Track Championship titles at Calshot in the 2003/4 winter series, and the Eastern Counties Track Championship at the same time.

From late last year injuries prevented him from competing in this winter’s championships, but he is now back on form and training for up to five hours a day for the forthcoming event. He hopes that the tour, which will earn points with the world cycling body, the UCI, will bring him further attention from top teams and will get him into top form for the coming season’s road racing calendar.

Joe is paying for a lot of the costs of the trip himself. If you would like to help with sponsorship please call 01438 221560
